Prof. Vigor Yang and several research engineers recognized with the Statistics in Physical Engineering Sciences Award

The American Statistical Association has bestowed its 2019 Statistics in Physical Engineering Sciences (SPES) award to a team of Georgia Tech researchers from the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering and the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

The SPES Award is bestowed each year upon individuals whose innovative use of statistics helps them to solve a high-impact problem in the physical and engineering sciences. This year's award recognized the work presented in  An Efficient Surrogate Model for Emulation and Physics Extraction of Large Eddy Simulationswhich was published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association  in 2018.

Professor Vigor Yang co-authored the award-winning article with AE research engineers Xingjian Wang, Shing-Ting Yeh, and Yu-Hung Chang, and several colleagues from ISYE: Simon Mak, Chih-Li Sung, V. Roshan Joseph, and C.F. Jeff Wu.

The team's article proposes a new surrogate model for advanced propulsion and power-generation systems that provides efficient prediction and uncertainty quantification of turbulent flows in swirl injectors with varying geometries, devices commonly used in many engineering applications.
